RCMP Says: Piracy OK (for Personal Use)

You’ve probably heard at this point that Demonoid is offline for the time being, thanks to Canadian law enforcement. Those that were Demonoid users, though (or users of any other piracy-based file sharing service) need not worry, so long as you can show your piracy was for personal use only.

French-language website Le Devoir reports from an interview with Noel St-Hilair of the RCMP said that “Piracy for personal use is no longer targeted,” and that the RCMP has given up finding individual pirates for several months, having “closed it’s eyes to this type of criminal behavior.”

The RCMP explained further that they’d rather focus on violations relating to electrical appliances and medicine, where infringement has been shown to actually negatively impact consumers and corporations. TorrentFreak agrees with this assessment, pointing to a recent study of Canadians finding that music piracy is a net-positive on music sales.

No word yet on when United States law enforcement will fall in line with its more forward thinking neighbors to the north.
